    Whether you're a seasoned swing dancer looking to add something new to your repertoire, an experienced dancer in a different style of dance, or are brand new to dancing altogether, Providence Swings is sure to have a class that will suit you! We offer progressive weekly classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in East Coast Swing, Lindy Hop, Charleston, and Balboa. Classes focus on technique and connection as well as moves. We rotate partners frequently throughout our classes, so whether you come alone, with a partner, or with a friend, you will have the opportunity to dance with a variety of people throughout the lesson. Come join us to learn how to dance in a supportive and entertaining environment!

    Prices & Registration

    All classes start at 7:00pm and are 1h15min long.

    If paid in full at the first lesson:
    A 3-week class series costs $25 ($15 for students/low income)
    A 4-week class series costs $35 ($20 for students/low income)
    A 5-week class series costs $45 ($25 for students/low income)
    A 6-week class series costs $55 ($30 for students/low income)

    Individual classes are $10 each ($5 for students/low income)

    Students wishing to repeat an entire class series will receive a $10 discount off the above prices.

    NOTE: Students will not be allowed to drop in to any class series after the 2nd class in each series.

    We accept cash or checks made out to Providence Swings.

    All classes are followed by a practice session that is included in the
    price of the lessons.
    On Tuesdays, the practice session goes from 8:15 to 9pm;
    On Thursdays the practice session (a.k.a. the Bread & Butter Jam) goes from 8:15 until 11pm.
    With the purchase of the Tuesday class series, the Thursday Bread & Butter Jam is free.

    We encourage you to stay for the practice session, dance, socialize, have fun, and try out your new moves in order to improve and expand your dancing.


    Tuesday Beginner Series (7:00-8:15pm)
    May
    Beginning Swing A
    Brian & Wendy (4 wks, starts May 6)
    Learn the fundamentals of 6-count swing. This is where you should begin if you have no previous knowledge of swing dancing, or if you would like to review the basics of 6-count swing. No experience required. No partner necessary.
    June
    Beginning Swing B
    Brian & Wendy (4 wks, starts June 3)
    Expand upon the fundamentals of 6-count swing learned in Beginning Swing A. Some additional moves and technique will be shown as well as a focus on proper footwork and styling. No partner necessary.
    July
    Charleston A
    Scott & Tara (5 wks, starts July 1)
    Starting with the basic 8-count step, this dynamic and energetic class series will explore the fundamentals of the granddaddy of the swing dances, and will also teach you how to incorporate it into your East Coast Swing or Lindy Hop. Previous swing dance experience is helpful, but not essential. No partner necessary.

    Charleston B
    Scott & Tara (4 wks, starts Aug 5)
    This class expands on the Charleston movements taught in Charleston A. New moves will be added to your repertoire with an emphasis on lead & follow and musicality. Previous Charleston experience is required. No partner necessary.

    Thursday Beginner/Intermediate Series (7:00-8:15pm)
    May
    Beginning Lindy Hop A
    Marc-Andre & Jennifer (5 wks, starts May 1)
    Learn the fundamentals of 8-count Lindy Hop, including the swingout, the lindy circle, and basic turns. Previous experience with 6-count swing is helpful, but not required. No partner necessary.
    June
    Beginning Lindy Hop B
    Marc-Andre & Jennifer (4 wks, starts June 5)
    Expand upon the basics learned in Beginning Lindy Hop A. Additional 6- and 8-count moves will be added to make your dancing more dynamic. Focus will be on connection and lead & follow awareness. Knowledge of basic Lindy Hop is required. No partner necessary.
    July
    Beginning Lindy Hop C
    Wil & Sandra (4 wks, starts July 10)
    Continue to expand upon the basics learned in Beginning Lindy Hop A & B. Emphasis will be on getting the kinks out of certain movements, tension, compression, and styling. Previous Lindy Hop experience is required. No partner necessary.
    August
    Balboa Basics
    Matt & Jennifer (3 wks, starts Aug 7)
    Learn many of the pure Balboa and Bal-Swing basics of this quick, close partnered dance that developed on the crowded dance floors in 1930s California. Previous experience with basic frame and connection is helpful. No partner necessary.

    Thursday Intermediate Series (7:00-8:15pm)

    Charleston C
    Jason & Tara (5 wks, starts May 1)
    Can't get enough Charleston? Neither can we! This class will build on the material taught in Charleston A & B by introducing new moves and variations as well as focusing on both technique and musicality. Previous experience in both side-by-side and tandem Charleston required. No partner necessary.
    June
    Musicality: Hitting the Breaks
    Jason & Tara (4 wks, starts June 5)
    Wish that you could hear the breaks in the music before they occur? Want to learn moves that accentuate those breaks? Each class in this series will spend part of the time studying song structure and musical phrasing, and part of the time learning one or two ways to accentuate breaks that occur at different points in the music. Basic Lindy Hop experience required. No partner necessary.
    July
    In a Jam: 8 Bars of Fury
    Todd & Beth (4 wks, starts July 10)
    Jams can be a blast, but they can also be a little scary if you haven't been in them often. Prepare yourself by learning some fast, flashy dancing to use when jumping into a swing jam. Solid Lindy Hop foundation required. A new routine will be taught each week, so drop-ins will be permitted. No partner required.
    August
    Lindy Jambalaya with various instructors
    (3 wks, starts Aug 7)
    So you want to stand out from the rest of the Lindy Hop crowd or just try something different? In this class, you will learn how to incorporate elements of a different dance style (bellydance, tap, and hip hop) into your Lindy each week. Solid Lindy foundation required. This class may be taken on a drop-in basis. No partner necessary.
